When I think of Kachanivka, I see the avenues where Taras Shevchenko once strolled, the halls echoing with Nikolai Gogol’s conversations, and the walls that remember Ilya Repin’s brushstrokes. This corner of Chernihiv region, the heart of the National Historical and Cultural Reserve, breathes history and creativity. It’s here that our exhibition, Rest for the Soul, came to life—a project we brought to fruition alongside the First Private Museum of Contemporary Ukrainian Art. For me, this event is a bridge between eras, a moment when art becomes a balm for the soul and a reminder of our resilience.
A Dialogue Across Centuries
Imagine yourself in the historic halls of Kachanivka, where every step resonates with the past. Before you are the canvases of contemporary Ukrainian artists, telling stories of Ukraine today. Nearly 30 works from our museum’s collection come alive in this space: the Crimean landscapes of Viktor Tolochko and Valentyn Bernadsky, radiating the warmth of the sea; the Zakarpattia motifs of Yuriy Herts and Vyacheslav Prykhodko, filled with festive joy; the delicate, almost poetic paintings of Orest Sleshynsky from Odesa; the vibrant canvases of Oleksandr Khmelnytsky from Kharkiv; the profound works of Kyiv artists Iryna Hodunova, Lyuba Rapoport, Hanna Fainerman, and Ihor Chamata; and the bold energy of Lviv’s Volodymyr Patyk. Each piece is a voice, speaking of love for our homeland, its beauty, and its soul.
Within Kachanivka’s walls, these paintings take on a new resonance. They’re not merely displayed—they engage in a dialogue with history. Art created today intertwines with the spirit of those who worked here centuries ago. This connection between past and present creates a sense of unity, one I feel every time I see visitors pause before the canvases, reflect, and find an echo of their own emotions.
Kachanivka: Where Culture Comes Alive
Kachanivka is a treasure where history doesn’t stand still—it lives. Its avenues, palace, and parks are not just beautiful; they’re a hearth of Ukrainian culture that has drawn creative minds for centuries. In the 19th century, works born here shaped our identity. Today, we carry on that tradition by bringing contemporary art to this space. The Rest for the Soul exhibition is unique precisely because of Kachanivka—its atmosphere lends depth to every artwork, inviting viewers not just to look but to feel, remember, and dream.
This place reminds us that our culture is not only our past but also the present we create together. In times when war challenges us, Kachanivka becomes a sanctuary where we can pause, breathe, and realize that beauty never fades. It lives in the paintings, in the nature outside the windows, in our ability to create despite everything.
Art That Gives Strength
The war has changed us all, but it has also shown how strong our culture is. Art has become a way for many to process pain, find hope, and feel part of something greater. Rest for the Soul is not just the exhibition’s title—it’s its essence. Each work invites you to pause, feel the warmth of our native land, and remember why we love Ukraine. In these challenging times, art is not a luxury but a necessity—it heals, unites, and reminds us who we are.
I deeply believe in the power of art. For me, it’s a way to preserve Ukrainian culture, make it accessible to everyone, and uplift the spirit of our nation. Every project we realize with the museum and our charitable foundation is a step toward ensuring our heritage endures, inspires new generations, and becomes part of our future.
So, I invite you to Kachanivka—a place where art comes alive, where history whispers its stories, and the nature outside complements the paintings on the walls. Come to see Rest for the Soul, to feel a connection with our culture, to find a moment of peace and inspiration. This exhibition is not just about art—it’s about us, about our ability to create beauty even in the darkest times.
This journey through art is just one of many steps we take together. Let’s keep preserving and creating our culture, so it shines like an unquenchable flame.
